iPhone grayscale: how to turn it on, and off again

· 4 min read · by the makers of finit, which records your hours and leaves your screen colors alone

Grayscale takes the color out of everything on the iPhone screen: icons, photos, videos, the red badges. Some people turn it on to make the phone less tempting. Others find their screen black and white one day and want the color back. This page covers both, plus what one study found and what grayscale doesn't do.

How to turn on grayscale#

Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Color Filters. Turn on Color Filters and choose Grayscale. The whole screen changes at once. If a slider appears below the filters, it sets how strong the effect is.

Grayscale only changes what the display shows. Apple notes that color filters change how images and videos look on screen, but the photos you take are still saved in color.

Put it on a triple-click#

Four menus is a long way for a switch you will want to flip often. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut and select Color Filters. From then on, three quick presses of the side button turn grayscale on or off. On an iPhone with a Home button, triple-click that instead. If you select more than one feature in the list, the triple-click opens a short menu and you tap the one you want. If your presses are too slow to register, Side Button in the same Accessibility menu adjusts the click speed.

The shortcut makes a simple routine possible: gray by default, color for a minute when a photo, a map or a chart needs it, then gray again. Control Center can hold a Color Filters control too, if you prefer a tap. One interaction worth knowing: Night Shift removes other color filter effects, but Apple says it leaves grayscale alone.

Why is my iPhone screen gray?#

If the screen went black and white and you didn't change a setting, the usual cause is the shortcut above. Three quick presses of the side button, in a pocket or while pulling the phone out of a tight case, are enough to switch Color Filters on. The fix is the same three presses. If that does nothing, or does something else, go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Color Filters and turn Color Filters off.

Two less common causes. If Color Filters is already off, check Zoom under Accessibility: while Zoom is on, its Zoom Filter can be set to Grayscale. Set the filter to None, or turn Zoom off. If the screen looks dim and washed out rather than gray, look for Reduce White Point under Display & Text Size. A screen that is blank gray and ignores your touch is a different problem. Try a force restart first: press and quickly release volume up, then volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

What the evidence says#

One study measured it directly. In a small randomized trial by A. J. Holte and F. R. Ferraro, published in The Social Science Journal in 2020, students switched to grayscale cut their daily screen time by just under forty minutes across the following week (the paper). That is one small study, over one week, with college students, and it says nothing about month three. It is still one of the few tactics in our reduce-screen-time playbook with a measurement attached.

What grayscale doesn't do#

It blocks nothing. Every app opens, every notification still arrives, and a feed of text loses less than a feed of photos. It also comes off with the same three presses that turned it on, so it helps only as long as you leave it on. If the pull starts with notifications, a Focus that silences everything but people does more. If you want the whole stripped-down phone, grayscale is the first step of turning your iPhone into a dumbphone.

To know whether it worked for you, compare your numbers from before and after. Screen Time only keeps about four weeks of detail, so look at the week before you switched while it is still there. This is the part we build, so judge accordingly: finit keeps every day of your screen time for years, on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud, so the before is still there long after Apple's window has closed.

The short answers#

How do I turn on grayscale on iPhone?

Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display and Text Size, then Color Filters. Turn on Color Filters and choose Grayscale. The whole screen turns black and white right away.

Why is my iPhone screen gray or black and white?

Usually Color Filters was switched on, often by three quick presses of the side button, which run the Accessibility Shortcut. Press it three times again, or turn off Color Filters in Settings under Accessibility, Display and Text Size.

How do I switch grayscale on and off quickly?

Go to Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut and select Color Filters. After that, a triple-click of the side button turns grayscale on or off from anywhere.

Does grayscale reduce screen time?

In one small randomized trial, students switched to grayscale cut daily screen time by just under forty minutes across the following week. It is one short study, so treat grayscale as an experiment and measure your own result.

Grayscale is an experiment, and an experiment needs a before and an after. Keep the record that shows both.
