How to turn your iPhone into a dumbphone: the free two-week test

· 4 min read · by the makers of finit, an iPhone app, so we have a stake in the phone you keep

Before you buy a dumbphone, you can get close to one on the iPhone you already have. Four changes do most of the work: no color, a Focus that lets people and a few tools through, one Home Screen page, and almost no notifications. They cost nothing and come off in a minute. Two weeks tells you whether you miss the feed, or the things the phone does for you, like tickets, maps and banking.

Take the color out#

Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Color Filters. Turn on Color Filters and choose Grayscale. Then add Color Filters to the Accessibility Shortcut in the same Accessibility menu, so three presses of the side button bring color back for a photo or a map, and three more take it away. The grayscale guide has the details.

A Focus that lets people through, and little else#

In Settings → Focus, tap the plus button, choose Custom, and give it a name. Under People, add the people who should reach you; their calls and messages come through as usual. Under Apps, allow Maps and the one or two apps where a missed alert would cost you, such as your calendar. Everything else is silenced and waits in Notification Center.

Turn it on from Control Center, or use Add Schedule to run it all day. A Focus only filters notifications, and every app still opens, which is why the next step matters. How Focus works has its own page.

One Home Screen page#

Make one page that holds only tools: Phone, Messages, Maps, Camera, Wallet, and anything else you can't do without. For every other app, touch and hold the icon, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. Nothing is deleted. The app moves to the App Library, one swipe past your last page, and search still finds it.

To hide whole pages, touch and hold the wallpaper until the icons jiggle, tap the dots at the bottom of the screen, and uncheck every page but the tools page. Or keep the pages and pick the tools page under Home Screen in your Focus, so the full phone comes back when the Focus ends. Last, in Settings → Home Screen & App Library, choose App Library Only, so new downloads don't land on the clean page.

Notifications off, app by app#

The Focus covers the hours it runs. For the rest, go to Settings → Notifications, tap each app that isn't a person or a tool, and turn off Allow Notifications. Start with feeds, shops, games and news.

What iOS won't let you do#

On Android you can replace the home screen with a minimalist launcher. On iPhone you can't: iOS has no setting that hands the Home Screen to another app. So apps sold for iPhone as dumbphone apps or minimalist launchers work inside Apple's Home Screen, usually as a widget with a plain list of apps, or as shortcuts that open them. Every app you own stays one search away. We haven't tested those apps, so we don't rate them here.

Every switch on this page also flips back in seconds. If that is too easy, put the apps that eat you behind App Limits with a Screen Time passcode someone else sets, and read where those limits leak first. What a real dumbphone offers is that the apps are not there at all, and no iPhone setting copies that.

Judge it after two weeks#

Two questions decide it. First, what did you reach for and miss? Note it each time: a ticket, a map, a code, a group chat. That list is what a dumbphone would take away. Second, what did the hours do? In Screen Time's Week view you can page back to the two weeks before the test and compare them with the two weeks during, as long as you look within the four weeks the iPhone keeps.

This is the part we build, so judge accordingly. finit keeps every day of your screen time, per app, for years, on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud. The before doesn't expire, and you can check whether month three still looks like week two. If the free version worked, keep it. If you only missed the feed and want more distance than settings can give, read the Light Phone alternatives before you buy anything.

The short answers#

Can you turn an iPhone into a dumbphone?

Mostly. Grayscale, a Focus that lets only people and a few tools through, one Home Screen page and notifications off get you close. You keep maps, payments and codes, and every app stays one search away.

Is there a dumbphone app for iPhone?

Some apps call themselves dumbphone apps or minimalist launchers, but iOS does not let any app replace the Home Screen. They work through widgets and shortcuts on Apple's own Home Screen, and the built-in settings cover much of the same ground for free.

How long should I test a dumbphone setup on my iPhone?

Two weeks is enough to learn what you miss. Compare your Screen Time for the two weeks before and the two weeks during while the iPhone still has both, since it deletes the detail after about four weeks.

Two weeks of a quieter iPhone only count if you can see what they changed. Keep the record of both.
