Take an average life, about 83 years if the statistics are kind, and cut it into weeks. You get roughly 4,300 cells: one row per year, 52 little squares across. Every week that passes fills exactly one of them, whether you noticed the week or not. It is the least sentimental picture of a life ever drawn, which is precisely why it works. Where the idea comes from#

The internet met the grid in 2014, when Tim Urban published "Your Life in Weeks" on Wait But Why, a stick-figure blog post that has since been printed onto a million posters. Oliver Burkeman's book Four Thousand Weeks gave the number its bestseller era in 2021. But the move itself is ancient: the Stoics kept skulls on their desks for the same reason, and monks called it memento mori (remember that you die), not as morbidity but as a filing system for what matters. The grid is the spreadsheet version: death as a countable number of cells, small enough to fit on one page, large enough to hold everything you'll ever do.

Why a grid lands when a number doesn't#

Tell someone they'll live about 4,300 weeks and nothing happens; it's a statistic. Show them the grid and something does, because a shape can do what a number can't: it has an edge. You can see where you are. You can put your thumb over what's left of your thirties. Psychologists who study time perception have found something consistent with this: when time feels limited rather than open-ended, people reweight toward what matters to them, the effect Laura Carstensen's socioemotional selectivity work documented over decades. And the asterisk, which Carstensen herself insists on: none of that proves that hanging a weeks poster changes anyone's behavior. We make no such claim for the grid or for our app. The grid isn't therapy. It's just true, and most of us have never once seen the truth drawn to scale.

The honest math#

Three footnotes the posters skip. 83 is an average: the real figure swings by a decade or more depending on where you live (finit draws your grid to your own country's life-expectancy figures, from a table of 219 of them, rather than one borrowed constant). Averages describe populations, not you: the grid is a perspective, not a prophecy, and treating it as a deadline misses the point. And the cells are not equal: you'll sleep through roughly a third of each one, and the waking hours divide further, which is where this stops being philosophy and starts being data.

Screen time, drawn in weeks#

This is the crossover that made us build an app. At the average four hours of phone per day, you spend a quarter of your waking hours on the screen. In grid terms, the phone fills about 13 of your 52 cells every year, measured in waking time. Run that from age twenty to eighty and it shades roughly 780 cells: fifteen waking years, a solid amber block on anyone's poster. Three hours a day is still over a thousand hours a year: famously, enough to learn a language, annually.

None of this says the hours are wasted; screens hold friendships, work, and most of the world's writing, and pretending otherwise is a shame merchant's trick. The honest question is quieter: which cells would you shade gladly, and which would you want back? That question can't be answered from memory. And your iPhone, which counts every minute, deletes the evidence after about four weeks. A lifetime question deserves a longer record than that.
