You scheduled Downtime, and the evening looks exactly like before. Limits that don't limit are almost never broken; they are configured to be polite, and politeness is one toggle away from useless. Here is the checklist, from most likely to least. ## The one toggle that decides everything Open **Settings → Screen Time → App Limits**, tap your limit, and look for **Block at End of Limit**. With it off, a spent limit only produces a notice you can dismiss, the app never actually locks. With it on, the limit ends in a real block screen, and getting past it takes a deliberate override. If your limit feels decorative, this toggle is the reason nine times out of ten. ## Without a passcode, every wall has a door Without a Screen Time passcode, the block screen offers to ignore the limit, one tap, no cost. Set one under **Settings → Screen Time**, and make it a code you don't type on autopilot. The same passcode is what makes Downtime real: without it, every restriction is a suggestion. With it, the 11 p.m. version of you has to at least work for the scroll, which is the entire mechanism, and also its limit, since you own the code. When you create a limit, add the website too: in the limit's app picker, the **Websites** section lets you include the domain. YouTube is the classic escape, limited as an app, wide open as a tab. If a limit works but use continues, check the browser before doubting the feature. ## Downtime that never arrives Downtime needs its schedule actually enabled: **Settings → Screen Time → Downtime**, with **Scheduled** switched on and the hours set. Apps on the Always Allowed list ignore Downtime by design, so check that list if half your home screen stays live. And on family-managed devices, remember the settings live on the organizer's side; a child device can't loosen what a parent set, which sometimes reads as broken when it is working exactly as intended. ## When the limits work and you don't If everything above is set and you still end the day past every fence, the configuration isn't the problem, and neither are you, exactly. Soft limits run on the motivation they are supposed to replace. The honest alternatives are a harder wall, a different mechanism, or a different goal: seeing the number clearly instead of arguing with it.
