# What is Focus on iPhone? Personal, Focus Status, and a simple setup

9 October 2026 · 4 min read · by the makers of finit, a screen-time app that blocks nothing either

A Focus is a set of rules for the times you want fewer interruptions. While it is on, the iPhone silences notifications except from the people and apps you allow, and it can switch to a different Home Screen page and Lock Screen. Do Not Disturb is one Focus. Personal, Work and Sleep are presets Apple includes as well, and you can make your own.

## What a Focus does

Every Focus lives in **Settings** → **Focus**, and each one has the same parts:

- **People** and **Apps** decide whose notifications get through. Everything else is silenced and goes to Notification Center.
- **Home Screen** and **Lock Screen** let a Focus show only the pages you pick and a Lock Screen of your choice while it runs. Picking pages needs more than one Home Screen page.
- **Focus Filters** change what apps show, for example which mail account or calendar appears.
- **Add Schedule** turns a Focus on at a set time, at a location, or while you use a certain app.

You turn a Focus on in Control Center: tap Focus, then the one you want. Its icon then shows in the status bar and on the Lock Screen, the moon for Do Not Disturb. Only one Focus runs at a time.

## What is Personal Focus?

**Personal** is one of the presets in **Settings** → **Focus**, next to **Work** and **Sleep**. Apple describes it as being for time with family or time for yourself. Apart from the name and icon it works like every other Focus: you choose who and which apps can still reach you.

If Personal turns on by itself, a setting did it. It can be a schedule under **Add Schedule**, or **Smart Activation**, which picks times from signals like your location and app use. Or it is **Share Across Devices**: a Focus you start on your Mac or iPad then starts on your iPhone too. The first two sit inside Personal, the third on the main Focus screen.

## What Focus Status shares, and with whom

When a Focus is on, Focus Status lets apps you allow tell people that you have notifications silenced. In Messages, someone who writes to you sees a note in the conversation saying so. They don't see which Focus it is: Apple says apps never learn its name. If it can't wait, they can tap **Notify Anyway**, and your phone alerts you after all.

You control it in **Settings** → **Focus** → **Focus Status**. Turn **Share Focus Status** off to share nothing, or keep it on and choose which Focuses share it. If you see "notifications silenced" under a friend's name, your message has still arrived. Their phone just stayed quiet.

## A setup for fewer interruptions, without blocking anything

This one uses Personal for the evening, but any Focus works the same way.

1. In **Settings** → **Focus** → **Personal**, open **People** and add the few people who should always reach you. Keep **Allow Repeated Calls** on: a second call from the same person within three minutes then rings through.
2. Open **Apps** and allow only the apps where a late notification costs you something, such as your calendar.
3. Tap **Add Schedule** and set a time, for example every day from 8 pm to 7 am.
4. Optional: under **Home Screen**, pick one page with the apps you actually want in the evening.

Nothing here is blocked. Every app still opens, and silenced notifications wait in Notification Center for the morning. If you want apps to stop opening, that is the job of **App Limits** and **Downtime** with a Screen Time passcode, and [those have loopholes of their own](https://getfinit.com/blog/app-limits-not-working). For the stricter version with grayscale and a single Home Screen page, see [how to turn your iPhone into a dumbphone](https://getfinit.com/blog/iphone-dumbphone).

## How to tell whether it worked

A Focus should show up first as fewer interruptions. Apple's Screen Time report counts [pickups](https://getfinit.com/blog/iphone-pickups) and notifications per day, so compare a week before with a week after, within the roughly four weeks the iPhone keeps. Fewer hours is a separate question. This is the part we build, so judge accordingly: finit keeps your hours per app for years, so the month before your Focus is still there six months later. It records time, not pickups or notifications.

## The short answers

### What is Focus on iPhone?

Focus is a set of rules for when you want fewer interruptions. While it is on, it silences notifications except from the people and apps you allow, and it can switch your Home Screen pages and Lock Screen.

### What is Personal Focus on iPhone?

Personal is one of the Focus presets Apple includes, meant for time with family or for yourself. It works like any other Focus: you choose who and which apps can still reach you while it is on.

### What is Focus Status on iPhone?

Focus Status lets apps such as Messages tell people that you have notifications silenced while a Focus is on. They do not see which Focus it is, and they can still notify you if something is urgent.

### Why does my Focus turn on by itself?

Usually a schedule, Smart Activation, or Share Across Devices, which turns a Focus on for all your devices when you turn it on for one. Open the Focus in Settings and remove the schedule you do not want.

A quieter phone is easy to feel and hard to prove. [Keep the record that settles it](https://getfinit.com/why).
